In this article, we explore the Ayurvedic wisdom of Ojas—the subtle energy that sustains vitality, clarity, and inner radiance.
Ojas is described as the most refined essence of the body, emerging through a deep process of transformation—from food to plasma and to blood, all the way to the creative seed. When this energy is consciously refined and conserved, it awakens profound vitality and spiritual light.
Ojas in Tantra
The term Ojas (Sanskrit: ओजः) in Ayurveda indicates a body fluid that is the purest form of all the dhatus (धातवः) supporting the body. It translates as something that “emanates a lot of light,” “shines very brightly,” and “flows very beautifully”.
In the context of Tantra, Ojas refers to a very particular form of energy that can adapt, meaning it can transform itself into any kind of energy. This energy can take one form or another according to our needs.
Ojas is obtained through the process of transmutation and sublimation by preserving our procreative potential.
How is Ojas generated?
In the gross aspect of food, the nutritional part is actually quite small. It’s just the tip of the iceberg of what food truly brings into the body.
When you eat, you first chew and then digest. Part of the nutrients support the physical processes, but food also contains a subtle energy.
According to the teachings of Ayurveda, this subtle energy first nourishes the lymph and plasma, and from there it supports the function of the blood. It is then further transformed into muscle and then into fat. From fat, it is transformed into bone; from bone into marrow and nerves. Finally, from marrow and nerves, it is transformed into the procreative substance (sperm in men, menstrual blood in women).
The procreative potential is the last to be produced — the most refined physical essence.
For this process to happen properly, the body needs to be healthy and balanced. Only then is there enough energy to support the formation of the procreative substance. We can observe this from experience: when the body is sick, depleted, or not well cared for, fertility and reproductive fluids are significantly affected.
The Process of Inner Refinement
The procreative potential takes a long time to be produced.
There is a process of continuous refinement. Think of it like a refinery. You start with something raw, like crude oil. You put it into the refinery, and over time, it becomes more and more refined. The heat is increased gradually, and step by step it produces more subtle forms.
In our case, this process generates the energies that support the lymph, the plasma, the blood, and so on. And finally, after about 30 to 35 days, the seed is formed.
So the procreative potential appears at the end of a long process of inner refinement. This essence has to become highly, highly refined. If the seed is not lost, it undergoes a further transformation and becomes ojas, the mahadhatu — the supreme tissue of the human being.
From the perspective of Ayurveda, everything we take in — food and drink — goes through this same process. At the end, it generates the creative energy, the procreative potential, the sexual fluids.
If you reach this final stage and do not waste it, the body becomes like a powerful refinery. It takes around 35 days to produce the most refined substance in your being.
And then the question is: what do you do with it?
If it is not lost, it is reabsorbed. It transforms into a subtle light, a luster — a very potent force within your being.
